Six Area Students Compete in Siemens National Finals

Six students in the Northern Virginia area are competing in the 2015 Siemens Foundation STEM Competition. These regional finalists recently advanced through the semifinal round, and now have a chance to compete at the National Finals taking place on Dec. 4-8 in Washington, D.C., where grand prize winners walk away with $100,000 scholarships.

Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Va. announced that Cadet Sergeant Timothy Arndt, of Fairfax Station, was officially named Fishburne Military School’s Cadet Non-Commissioned Officer of the Month for October.

Lorton, Springfield Peformers Sing ‘Songs for a New World’

Lorton-based, performing arts academy students showcases directorial talent at Workhouse Arts Center.

Metropolitan Youth Theatre students of the Metropolitan School of the Arts (MSA) of Alexandria and Lorton will present its student-directed and produced performance of Jason Robert Brown’s “Songs for a New World” on Friday, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sunday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. at the W-3 Theatre at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton.

When Carol Baker cried, no one heard her. She and a classmate were alone in the girls locker room, and as Baker, then an eighth grade student, tried to leave, her classmate grabbed her gym shirt and pushed her into a locker. They weren’t fighting over anything in particular and Baker didn’t sustain any physical injuries.

The 16th annual Clifton Labor Day Car Show was a huge success on Monday, Sept. 7, featuring some 310 registered cars and earning approximately $30,000 for two charities: Life with Cancer and the Northern Virginia Therapeutic Riding Program.

Torres Trial Date Set for December

Bond denied for former police officer charged with murdering John Geer.

Shortly after 10 a.m. on Aug. 19, former Fairfax County Police officer Adam Torres entered the circuit courtroom for his arraignment, dressed in a baggy, blue-green prison jumpsuit. Torres was indicted the previous Monday by a special grand jury for killing Springfield resident John Geer in August, 2013.
